What Does a Small Business Website Really Cost in Australia in 2026?

The price of a website is more than the build fee. Compare the scope, ongoing costs and transfer terms before choosing a package.

By Astra IT ·

Introduction

A monthly website plan and a several-thousand-dollar build can both be reasonable purchases. The useful question is what your business receives for the money—and what you will still need to pay or do yourself.

There is no single Australian website price. A focused site for a sole trader is a different project from a large product catalogue, membership portal or custom booking platform. This guide explains how to compare the real cost without confusing a low starting price with a complete solution.

The short answer: compare the scope and the first year

Here are two current, clearly scoped examples. Astra IT advertises a custom one-page managed website at A$59 a month or A$590 a year, with no setup fee. At the larger build end, Kraken Digital advertises an Essential website with up to six pages at A$3,499 plus GST, including the first year of hosting.

Those are individual providers’ advertised offers, checked on 3 November 2026—not a market average or equivalent packages. Page count, ownership arrangements, content work and ongoing services differ. See Astra IT’s current plan and the published multi-page example for their respective scope.

Three common ways to pay for a website

Build it yourself: Pay for a platform subscription, domain and any paid extras, plus your own time. Check what is needed to connect your domain, remove platform branding, accept payments and get support.

Pay for a project build: Pay for an agreed design and development scope, usually with ongoing services priced separately or included for a defined period. Check what happens after launch and who handles edits, hosting, updates and renewals.

Choose a managed subscription: Pay a recurring fee covering the agreed website and ongoing care. Check what is included, what costs extra, and what can be transferred if you leave.

A DIY option can suit someone with time and confidence to maintain it. A project build can suit a larger brief or a business with its own technical help. A managed service can suit an owner who wants a defined monthly commitment and someone responsible for the website’s upkeep.

What should the website budget include?

Design, content and setup

Clarify the number of pages, revision rounds and features. Ask who writes the copy, prepares images and enters products. “Website included” does not tell you whether somebody will turn rough notes into finished service descriptions or whether you must supply everything ready to upload.

The costs that continue after launch

Check domain renewal, hosting, business email, maintenance, security, backups and support. Business Queensland’s website setup guidance explains these building blocks and notes that hosting needs vary with the site. Make sure a first-year inclusion does not hide a renewal you have not budgeted for.

Features and third-party charges

A booking calendar, online shop or payment connection can involve more than the visible button. Ask about configuration, transaction fees, paid integrations, extra pages and later changes. If a feature is included, confirm which part is included and whether an external provider charges separately.

Astra IT’s monthly and annual costs explained

The current base plan is advertised as a custom one-page website. Its published inclusions cover a supported standard domain while subscribed, hosting, security, maintenance, business email, relevant business tools and Australian support. Optional extras cost more when selected.

Monthly: A$59 each month. The base-plan total is A$708 if retained for all 12 months.

Annual: A$590 paid upfront for the annual term.

The annual difference is A$118 compared with twelve standard monthly payments. A$590 divided by twelve is approximately A$49.17 per month for comparison, but the annual plan is paid upfront; it is not billed at A$49.17 monthly. These totals exclude optional extras. Check the final order and applicable tax treatment before paying.

The monthly plan is advertised as cancellable at any time, but cancellation and transfer are separate matters. Astra IT’s current FAQ says transfer of the managed domain and eligible website files requires six months of base-plan payments or an applicable early-transfer payout, with outstanding invoices paid. Platform source code and third-party licences do not automatically transfer. Read the current subscription and transfer conditions before choosing a plan.

Use this checklist before accepting a quote

• Write down the site’s main job: enquiries, bookings, product sales or something else.

• Confirm the pages, content work and features in writing.

• Add setup, twelve months of recurring fees and essential extras.

• Compare renewal costs and the treatment of GST on the same basis.

• Check who controls the domain, content and accounts, and what happens if you leave.

• Ask how you request changes and what ongoing support covers.

Keep advertising and ongoing marketing separate in your budget. A website can give customers somewhere useful to go, but its purchase does not guarantee traffic or sales. Google explicitly cautions that SEO offers no automatic first-place ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest website always the best starting point?

Not if essential work sits outside the price or you cannot maintain it. Compare the smallest complete solution that suits your business, including your own time.

Is annual payment always better?

It may reduce the total price, but it also requires more cash upfront. Compare the saving with your budget, the term and the service conditions.

Do I need a large website immediately?

Not necessarily. A clear one-page site may cover a focused offer. Multiple distinct services, locations or products may need more space. Agree on the content before choosing a page allowance.
